Up above in the ‘wildlands’ of Harlem, lies a small space on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard. Among a mostly residential neighborhood on a unassuming corner was Art In Flux Harlem: a pop up art gallery that operates with Harlem artists and out of spaces in Harlem.
Last night’s exhibition - STREET, curated by Erin Goldberger, featured 7 artists, Jonathan Elliot, Matt Siffert, Bayete Ross Smith, Ruben Natal San Miguel, Jay Miriam, Eileen Burgess, and Harlem Biennale founder Edward Hillel; as well as actress/writer Azariah Gunn premiering her first book: A-Z Diaries.
The exhibit was cohesive and the work, powerful and well priced (average price for a piece being around $500 - prices go down or up from there depending on medium and size). The turn out was great, speckled with locals and art enthusiasts and of course the artists themselves. And in the midst of the sparkling moscato flowing, Azariah Gunn delivered a powerful presentation of three poems that set the crowd on fire. (Which wasn’t hard, it was hot as hell.) Art in Flux donates 5% of their proceeds to an organization called Artistic Noise (an art program for juvenile youth) and truly supports the Harlem community. Truly, a rose grown out of concrete.
The STREET exhibition runs from now to June 28 at Art in Flux Harlem, 118th and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard.
